Hot spots

In a discussion of teacher beliefs and intentions, Woods (1996)refers to 'hotspots' -that is, areas where a teacher's intentions or beliefs about ES/EF teaching don't fully match their actions. Do you have any such? Try using the following frameworks to make your own hot spot statements (you also need to provide further details about the issue that you raise):
a) I am pretty sure that ------ would be a good thing to try, but I haven't figured out how to work it into my teaching yet because----
b) I've read research which states that ----------- is beneficial, but I know I'm still doing ------ as--------.
c) I really believe in the value of --------------- and I'd like to incorporate it in the curriculum, but if I did so I'm afraid I'd lose my job/get into trouble/meet resistance from parents or students in that /in the sense that --------------

  1. a) There is no such thing that I think it would be good to try but I have not figured out how to use it because of something. We have internet, books and videos and lots of other information resources to rely on to figure out/learn sth. I could always find good ways to use some techniques thanks to our many ELT courses and many presentations as well as our practice teachings.
    b) I can easily adapt myself and change my behaviors. When I read that sth is good, I will do definitely do that if not at the first time, at the second or third.
    c) As I am not an employed teacher who works at an instituion and has to deal with administrators and parents, this is not applicable for me and I really do wonder why this premise was not excluded from this assignment as neither of us have that kind of context.

  2. a) I really could not find anything that I found beneficial but could not apply in the classroom. Everything I learnt was applicable enough and worked well.
    b) I've read research which states that deductive teaching of grammar is beneficial for every type of learner. I do not agree with that, and I know I always like teaching in an inductive way.
    c) I really believe in the value of using technology in EFL classrooms. However, I have doubts about whether students are ready or comfortable with that kind of learning. I am also not sure whether the institution where I will work will allow me to have that kind of teaching.

  3. a)Iam sure thgere are many new thing to try and figure out but I really do not know how to apply them in my classrooms. For example, the usage of blogs is very new in turkey and, although I want to use it I do not know How?
b)I do not have any problems with the researchs and using them in my classrroms but sometimes the school and the curriculum may not be appropriate to the usage of that method.
c)I really believe to the value of using new methods and approaches in the EFL classrooms however, the students and the school minister may not be ready for it. For example, we tried to teach the lesson through games and songs but the neither the teacher nor the children could understand the value of it.

  4. a) I am pretty sure that information gap activities would be a good thing to try, but I haven't figured out how to work it into my teaching yet because I thought that if I made them become pairs and do the activites, they would speak in Turkish and I didnt want that.
    b) I've read research which states that teacher should speak students' first language during the lesson is beneficial, but I know I speak in English always as I think that is not true and students can get enough input only with hearing the target language.
    c) I really believe in the value of communicative approach and I'd like to incorporate it in the curriculum, but if I did so I'm afraid I'd get into trouble with the school management sometimes because they will want me to teach grammar directly.

  5. a) I am pretty sure that using blogs and web sites would be a good thing to try, but I haven't figured out how to work it into my teaching yet because I don't have any specific ideas about my future teaching environment.
    b) I read lots of research that really reflects different ideas than mine such as L1 use or deductive grammar teaching and so on but I still have my teaching philosophy which is
    based on communicative language teaching.
    c) This is not applicable for me because I don't want to work in an institution that really impose different ideas than mine.

  6. a)I could not say a specific thing that ı have problems in how to work it into my teachings, but I have also some problems when ı try to figure out how I would integrate sharing websites such as blogs or turnitin. still, I believe that I can come over all the problems if I try my best.

    b) I read some researches that believe that L1 can be used in an EFL or ESL classes, but I do not think it will be benefical.

    c) ı really believe the power of games, videos, songs etc. in teaching English, but some parents and institutions think this as time waste. ın such a case, I would integrate both what they want and what ı want.

  7. a) I am pretty sure that using videos, films would be a good thing to try, but I haven't figured out how to work it into my teaching yet because it is difficult to integrate them with the courses.

    b) I've read research which states that teaching grammar in a deductive way is beneficial, but I am using inductive way as I trust that tecnique more than the other.

    c) I really believe in the value of communicative approach and I'd like to incorporate it in the curriculum, but if I did so I'm afraid that I can meet the resistance of the parents as they think that the students do not learn anything without writing the rules on their notebooks altough it is really time-consuming.

  8. a) TPRS because I am not sure whether this technique will work well with the young learners or the adults. It is also hard to control the classroom while applying this method because I am not well in giving effective instructions. I have also doubts about the attention of the students. I have been in the application of this methods and I lost my attention towards the end of the application. Especially the young learners may have difficulty in participating in the lesson and follow up the activities carefully.

    b) I have read research which states that there is no critical zone in acquiring the second language if the acquisition of the first language is completed properly but I believe that after a certain age, at least physically, people become inappropriate to language acquisition and they have more difficulties in learning and using the target language in daily life communication.

    c) I believe in the value of alternative assessment methods instead of exams. The students and the parents find these methods as overload and sometimes the students complain about always preparing projects or keeping records about their development. The parents want to see the development of their students in a concrete way so the exams seem fairer to them in terms of assessing and evaluating the students.
